Talk to people about EVs and the conversation usually starts with the showroom price and ends with cheap running costs. Both are true, but neither tells you what the decision is actually worth on its own. The honest number is the total cost over the years you own the car, and that pulls in purchase price, financing, depreciation and running costs together.
New vs used
The biggest fork in any EV purchase is new or used, and each has a real trade:
- New. You get the full manufacturer warranty and the newest battery technology, which matters because the battery is the most valuable component in the car. The cost is the highest price and the fastest depreciation, because new EV value drops most in the first few years.
- Used. Far lower upfront price, and the car has already taken its biggest hit in value. The trade is that you carry the battery and warranty risk yourself, and EV batteries do lose usable range slowly over time.
There is no right answer that applies to everyone. If you can absorb the risk of an aging battery and want the cheapest way into an EV, used is hard to beat. If you want certainty and the newest tech under warranty, new. Budget and risk tolerance decide, not fashion.
How you'll actually buy it
EVs are bought the same ways as any car in New Zealand, so the options are familiar:
- Outright cash. You own the car immediately and pay no interest. Simple, but it ties up a large lump of capital that could be doing other work.
- Financing. Spread the cost over time with interest, which raises the effective price of the car. Useful, but only worth it if the payments fit comfortably and the interest is understood.
- Leasing or novated arrangements. You pay to use the car rather than to own it outright. Often includes running costs in one payment, but you do not build equity in the vehicle.
Whichever route you take, the financing or leasing cost is part of the effective price and needs to be in the comparison. Do not compare a car you are financing against one you plan to pay in cash without adding the interest to the first.
The running-cost thinking that matters
EVs genuinely tend to be cheaper per kilometre than a comparable petrol car in most New Zealand circumstances, but that is only half the picture. The other half is that the upfront price and depreciation are usually far bigger numbers than the yearly fuel saving. A cheap-to-run EV you are still paying off for years may not be the bargain its running cost suggests.

What to check on a secondhand EV
A used EV needs the usual used car checks, and one extra that is the real point of difference: the battery.
- Battery health and history. Ask about how the car was charged, how the battery has aged, and any battery-related service or replacement. Battery wear is the main financial risk on a used EV.
- Real range between charges. Look at what the car actually shows after a full charge, not the headline figure from when it was new. If it stores noticeably less than the model should, that is a negotiating point now and a range problem later.
- Charging ability. Confirm it charges normally and at an acceptable speed. Slow or limited charging is a red flag.
- Warranty status. Find out whether the manufacturer battery warranty still applies and to what extent. That is a significant piece of protection.
- The usual used car stuff. Ownership register check, service history, inspection in person and a test drive.
All figures around EV incentives, purchase prices, running costs and charging rates change over time and by region. Government and council incentives come and go, so check what is current for your location before you count on it in your budget. Never rely on an old figure.
Buying an EV is decided by the total cost over time, not the sticker. Choose new or used based on your budget and battery-risk tolerance, cost the financing in, and on a used car make the battery health the centrepiece of your inspection.
