An electric car does not have a fuel gauge like a petrol car, because how you spend on it depends on where the electricity comes from. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive way to charge can be a big share of the whole running difference, so charging behaviour is the single most important lever in EV ownership.
Home charging
For anyone who can charge at home, this is normally the cheapest way to power an EV and the most convenient, because the car is sitting there anyway. You plug in when it suits you and it is full by morning. Two things shape the cost:
- Your electricity plan. Home charging adds to your power bill, so the rate you pay per unit is the price of your fuel. That is why the plan, not the car, does much of the work deciding per-kilometre cost.
- Charging speed and set-up. A standard household socket can charge slowly, while a dedicated home charger charges faster. The charger itself is an upfront cost, and some installations need an electrician, so the full cost is equipment plus install plus your power rate.

Why overnight charging matters
Plenty of NZ power plans charge less at certain hours, usually overnight, when demand is low. If your plan has a cheaper night rate, charging overnight is how the cost per kilometre stays low and predictable.
That makes overnight charging the quiet backbone of EV economics. If you can set the car to charge through the cheap window and the car is full by morning, you are running the EV on the lowest-cost electricity available to you. Public and rapid chargers
Public charging is where EV charging costs go up. There are broadly two types:
- Public chargers. Point of sale or on-street units you pay per use, priced per unit of electricity charged.
- Rapid chargers. The fast units often found at highway stops and fuel stations, built for long trips where time matters. They cost more per unit than home charging, and you pay a premium for the speed.
Public charging is essential for long trips and for people who cannot charge at home, but it is the most expensive way to power a car. Plugging into a rapid unit whenever convenient because you are out anyway is the fastest way to make an EV as costly to run as a petrol car. Use it for long runs, not the daily commute, where a home or overnight charge is the cheaper habit.
Charging costs vary by network, charger type and your own power plan, and both electricity tariffs and public charging prices change over time. Public charging is also only well spread across some areas of New Zealand so far, so if you regularly drive rural routes, check coverage before you rely on it.
Charging without a charger
The people for whom an EV is a genuinely different decision are renters and apartment dwellers without off-street parking. When you cannot plug in at home, the economics hinge on where you can charge reliably:
- Workplace charging. Some employers provide chargers, and a workplace top-up during the day can cover a big share of your weekly driving.
- Shared and public options. Some buildings and councils are adding chargers or allowing installations, and public units fill the gap in between.
- Plan ahead. If your only reliable charging is public and it costs more per unit, the cheap per-kilometre promise of the EV weakens. Work out your realistic charging routine before you buy, not after.
Turning charging into a budget
Charging cost only becomes controllable once it is a number. Annual kilometres, an estimate of what you will pay per unit at the places you actually charge, and a sense of how much of your charging is cheap slow home units versus expensive rapid units. Where and when you charge decides how cheap an EV really is. Home and overnight charging on a good plan is the low-cost base, public and rapid units are for trips and top-ups, and anyone who cannot charge at home should price their realistic routine before they commit.
